At Bonneville Speedweek 2007, a few buddies gathered in a basement taco bar. Fueled with tequila, Pete proclaimed that he would build a car for Speedweek 2008. When the laughter subsided, a $100 bet was placed and the wheels started turning. Chris mentioned that had an old Dodge Brothers flathead four-cylinder in a piece of farm equipment, and legend had it that ranchhand "Low Gear Charlie" never shifted it out of first gear. A few days later we met to inspect this antique engine and it looked pretty sophisticated for the era. Later that day, fueled by beer, we committed to building a vintage landspeed car in only ten months' time.
To make a long story short, the Montana Dodge Boys Fast Four Special did indeed make it to the Salt for Speedweek 2008, where it set a record on its very first run!
Fast forward to today, the team has now set nineteen landspeed records at Bonneville and El Mirage in two vintage landspeed cars.
Be careful what you wish for!
